Choosing an air conditioner replacement

There are 3 things to consider when choosing an air conditioner: size, efficiency and stages. Below we will go through each of these in more detail.

Size

The size of an air conditioner is measured in BTUs (British thermo unit)  A BTU is equal to the amount of energy it takes to raise one pound of water one degree. Another common term for air conditioner sizes is “ton”: 1 ton is equal to 12,000 BTUs. Here is a list of common air conditioner sizes:

  • 1.5 tons = 18,000 BTUs
  • 2 tons = 24,000 BTUs
  • 2.5 tons = 30,000 BTUs
  • 3 tons = 36,000 BTUs
  • 3.5 tons = 42,000 BTUs
  • 4 tons = 48,000 BTUs
  • 5 tons = 60,000 BTUs

For many years the idea that “some is good, more is better” was used when sizing air conditioners. Many contractors would install one size bigger just to make sure the customer wouldn’t call them in hot weather and complain that the air conditioner wasn’t keeping up.

Recent studies have shown that the majority of air conditioners are oversized, so what’s wrong with that? The problem with an oversized air conditioner is it wastes energy and that drives up your energy bills and it makes your house uncomfortable. An air conditioner is like a car engine: it has to warm itself up before it runs efficiently. An oversized air conditioner short cycles, and this short run time never allows the air conditioner to run efficiently or remove the humidity from the air. When the humidity is left in the air, your home will end up feeling cold and clammy.

The best way to size an air conditioner is to have a cooling load calculation performed on your home. Our system designer will take measurements of your home. This includes your doors, windows and insulation. Our system designer will then enter all the information into a computer program, and this will  calculate the cooling load. Now with the cooling load you can make an educated decision on what size air conditioner you need.

Efficiency

Air conditioner efficiency is rated using SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio): the higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the air conditioner is. In Minnesota we don’t see the payback on the realyl high SEER equipment like they see in Texas. Likewise, Texas doesn’t see the payback in super-efficient furnaces. Right now the minimum is 13 SEER, with a maximum of 20 SEER. 16 SEER equipment is reasonably priced and qualifies for many of the local rebates.

Staging

Most air conditioners found in our area are single stage. This means the air conditioner operates at one level. A 2-stage air conditioner operates at 2 levels, 70% or 100%. The idea behind 2-stage air conditioners is in milder weather the air conditioner will run at a lower level longer, which will help extract more humidity out of the air without you having to set the temperature in the house really low. Then when the outdoor temperature climbs you still have the second stage that will run at full capacity. 2-stage air conditioners also work well with zone systems, if only one zone is calling for cooling, the air conditioner will run on the first stage. If two or more zones are calling, the air conditioner will run on 2nd stage.
