When people hear the term “mini splits,” they think of the white wall units you see on vacation. While it is true these are mini splits, Fujitsu has come out with a new mini split that you will never see.
The Fujitsu “concealed“ mini split has taken on several names over the past few years; concealed, ducted and slim duct unit. Fujitsu uses the same quiet and efficient design of the wall unit and put it into a small, compact case that can be hidden in attics, closets and basements. The concealed unit is a micro air handler, we connect ductwork from the space you want to condition to the concealed unit. The only thing visible is the supply and return registers in the room.
Concealed vs Traditional vs High Velocity
You may ask yourself, why wouldn’t I just install a traditional or high velocity air handler? When a traditional or high velocity system is installed you have to run ducts from the attic to the first level or from the basement to the 2nd floor. Unless you have a major remodel happening at the time this can be quite intrusive on your home, especially in older vintage homes. When we install a concealed system, we install micro air handlers near the rooms you want to heat or cool. Having the concealed unit near the area you want to heat or cool saves energy by not having long duct runs in a 120-degree attic.
Generally in a two-story home we will install 2 concealed units in the attic: one for the master bedroom and an office, the second unit for 2 other bedrooms. The first level is conditioned by a larger concealed unit in the basement. With this system we do not have to run any ductwork through the closets, and we have the advantage of placing registers where you need them, not where you have a closet. This system has 3 thermostats that work independently of one another. This means you can just cool the master bedroom and office and leave the other units turned off to save energy.
